Chiang Mai is an especially soft landing for families with kids—thanks to the laid-back vibe, a bunch of different areas to stay in, and attractions that work for pretty much every age. In this post, we’ll recommend four key areas to stay in the city, plus hotel and resort picks that are especially family-friendly—with a focus on comfort, quiet, space for the kids to roam, and those little extras that make a family trip feel way smoother.
The best areas to stay in Chiang Mai for families
There are tons of interesting neighborhoods, but here are four solid options—each one feels totally different:
1. Old City – Right near the action, with easy access to markets, temples, and family-friendly attractions.
2. Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) – A modern, lively neighborhood close to restaurants, coffee shops, and kid-friendly spots like Think Park.
3. Riverside (Ping River area) – Calmer than the center, with river views and a relaxed, family kind of pace.
4. Mae Rim – Outside the city—quiet, more rural, lots of nature, and close to attractions like the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden and the botanical garden.
Which one should you choose? When we’re traveling with the kids, we personally prefer staying in the Old City—because it’s close to everything and walking around is actually fun (not a “why did we do this” situation). That said, the other areas might be your perfect match if you’re craving more quiet, more nature, or a more cosmopolitan vibe.

How to choose where to stay in Chiang Mai for families: tips from experience
1. Watch the location (main roads and markets) – The main streets in the Old City—like Ratchadamnoen Road—make it super easy to reach markets and temples, but in the evening they can get really loud because of the night markets. If you’ve got little kids who are sensitive to noise, it’s smarter to pick a hotel on a nearby side street instead of right on the main road.
2. Nearby green spaces – If your kids love room to run around, consider staying near the river area or closer to the edge of the city—like Mae Rim. These areas give you access to gardens and open spaces where kids can play more freely.
3. A kitchenette or a solid breakfast – Chiang Mai has plenty of cafes, but most open late (around 9:00–10:00 a.m.). If your family starts the day early, choose a hotel with a small kitchenette or a breakfast option that works for kids.
4. Close to family attractions – If you’re planning to visit spots like Chiang Mai Zoo or the Grand Canyon Water Park, make sure your lodging is a reasonable drive away—so you’re not donating your vacation time to traffic.
5. Noise levels around the hotel – Some hotels in the city center also host small parties or live music in the evenings. Read guest reviews on Booking to make sure the place is quiet and kid-friendly—especially if you’re traveling with babies or kids who are sensitive to noise.
6. An electric kettle + tea/coffee station in the room – In Thailand, it’s common for every hotel room to have an electric kettle and tea/coffee. Still, not every hotel gives you capsules or a decent coffee setup. If you’re the type who needs morning coffee to feel human, check in advance—or pick a hotel near a great cafe in Nimman.
7. A shaded pool is a big win – Chiang Mai can get seriously hot at midday. For families, it’s worth choosing a hotel with a pool that has some shaded areas, so the kids can enjoy it without battling the strong sun.
8. Parking if you plan to rent a car – If you’re renting a car for day trips outside the city, check whether the hotel offers free, easy-access parking. In areas like the Old City, parking can be a headache.
9. Reliable Wi-Fi – If your kids like watching a tablet—or you’re working remotely—make sure the hotel has strong Wi‑Fi. In some parts of Chiang Mai (like Mae Rim), you may run into dropouts, so it’s worth scanning reviews specifically about the connection.
10. Babysitting or on-site activities – Some of Chiang Mai’s higher-end hotels offer babysitting or kids’ activities like arts workshops or gardening. If you’re hoping for a little “adult time,” look for a place that offers those services.
