Key Info About Southern Thailand & the Islands

Who is this for—and what do you actually do there?
Southern Thailand serves up something for pretty much every kind of traveler—ocean lovers, water-sports junkies, beach-party people, and anyone craving quiet, more remote islands. It’s also great for families looking for mellow beaches and nature-y adventures, and for younger travelers chasing wild nightlife and famous beach parties.

What are the unique experiences in Southern Thailand?

  • World-class diving—the Andaman Sea area, especially around islands like Ko Phi Phi and Ko Lanta, is a major hotspot for divers from all over thanks to thriving coral reefs and a ridiculous variety of marine life.
  • The Full Moon Party on Ko Phangan—one of the most famous parties on the planet, held right on the beach on full-moon nights, pulling in tens of thousands of revelers.
  • Jungle adventures in Khao Sok—Khao Sok National Park is one of Thailand’s most beautiful reserves, with hiking, kayaking, and jaw-dropping lake views surrounded by jungle.
  • Limestone cliffs at Railay Beach (Railay Beach)—a legendary spot for rock climbers, with dramatic limestone walls dropping straight down toward the water.

What are the most popular places in Southern Thailand?
Some of the most loved destinations in Southern Thailand include Phuket (Phuket)—a vacation island with gorgeous beaches and buzzing nightlife, Ko Phi Phi (Ko Phi Phi)—islands known for some of the best diving out there, Krabi (Krabi)—with dramatic beaches and limestone cliffs, and Ko Samui (Ko Samui)—an island with pampering beaches and a laid-back vibe.

When should you go to Southern Thailand?

The best time to visit the south depends on the area—November through April is ideal for the Andaman Sea (including Phuket, Krabi, and Ko Phi Phi), when the weather is warm and dry. Beaches on the Gulf of Thailand, like Ko Samui and Ko Phangan, are a better bet from May to September, when they usually get pleasantly nice weather.

How do you get to Southern Thailand?

It’s easy to reach Southern Thailand via direct domestic flights from Bangkok to Phuket, Krabi, Ko Samui, and more. Plenty of local airlines run daily flights that are often surprisingly cheap. You can also go by bus or train, but the trip takes longer (around 12 hours). If you’re planning to hop to islands like Ko Phi Phi or Ko Phangan, ferries run from major ports in places like Phuket and Krabi, making island-to-island connections pretty painless.

How much time should you spend in Southern Thailand?

Try to give yourself at least 7–10 days to explore the islands and beaches down south. If you’re combining a few stops—like Phuket, Ko Phangan, and Krabi—add some travel days so you can actually enjoy each place instead of speed-running it.

How should you plan your route?

A smart move is to start on a main island like Phuket, Ko Samui, or Krabi, then branch out to nearby islands based on what you’re into—diving, parties, or chill beaches. It’s also worth carving out a day or two for jungle nature reserves or those iconic limestone cliffs for the perfect contrast between turquoise sea and wild, green interior.
